History & Purpose

Who Are We?

"There is hereby created the Masonic Research Society of South Carolina as a Lodge of Research subordinate to the Grand Lodge for the purpose of diffusing the true principles of Freemasonry by promoting, fostering, and conducting Masonic research and spreading Masonic knowledge."*

*Ahiman Rezon 1999.  Code of the Grand Lodge of South Carolina, Section 337, Research Society.

In 1988, Brethren in several locations of the Jurisdiction, desiring to form a Masonic study group, met to discuss the possibilities.  From the first meeting was born the SCMRS by approval of the Grand Lodge of Ancient Free Masons of South Carolina at its annual communication in April 1989.  Since that time, we have grown to an average of 350 members from 28 jurisdictions and six countries.

Who are we?  We are Master Masons, just like you, who are interested in Masonic research.

What Do We Do?

We promote, foster and conduct Masonic Research, particularly, but not limited to, this Jurisdiction.  As we visit lodges, we discuss the Society in an attempt to instill an interest in membership and in submission of articles for publication.  We encourage lodges and other Masonic organizations to study their past and other aspects of their existence.  Finally, individual members conduct research on a wide variety of Masonic subjects.

The articles printed over the years include, among others, The Lafayette Jewel (1989), Evolution of the Ahiman Rezon (1992), and Albert Gallatin Mackey Medal (1999).
When And Where Do We Meet?

Quarterly meetings are held in March, June, September, and December.  These meetings are conducted at various locations throughout the Jurisdiction, at the invitation of host lodges.  Members are notified of times and places in our newsletter.
